Gartner, Inc. revealed sales of mobile devices and smartphones worldwide grew during 3Q 2011 in a report titled "Market Share: Mobile Communication Devices by Region and Country, 3Q11" according to paidConent. In total, 440.5 million units were sold, an increase of 5.6% from 3Q 2010; smartphones accounted for 115 million units, up 42% from last year.
In the smartphone realm, the report reveals that global market share by operating system has changed drastically since 3Q 2010, with Android now capturing the highest percentage at 52.5%. Symbian holds 16.9% of the market, followed by Apple at 15% and RIM at 11%. Market shares for Symbian, Apple, and RIM have each declined since 3Q 2010, but Android has more than doubled its share, which was 25.3% a year ago.
