French Media Companies Launch AltertInfo

May 31, 2005

The GESTE, the Online Publishers Organisation in France and its members, France Télévisions Interactive, Le Monde Interactif, RTL Net, Libé, Les, Le, L', 01Net, ZDNet, La, Le,,,,, are launching AlertInfo, a free RSS reader offering over 274 news and information feeds.

AltertInfo allows users to receive feeds of a variety of subjects which include: France, International, Business, Communication/Media//HighTech, Employment, IT and IT Solutions, Financial Markets, Leisure/Week-end/Culture, Music, Personal Investing and Wealth Management , Sports, Regions, Science, and People.

AlertInfo can be downloaded for free via the Web site and via the sites of the editors participating in the reader. Users can define and choose favorite subject areas and sources. The latest news is presented by title and timeliness. When users click on a title, the excerpt of the article unfolds in the Reader and a link to the article in the publisher's site appears. If the articles are accessible by subscription only and the user is a subscriber to that service, then he/she can access the article without further identification. To integrate the RSS reader of the GESTE, the publisher needs to be a member of the Organisation, a media company in the radio, television, and press sectors or a pure web player, and must hold the copyright of the articles it offers. The content is news and information related only.

The AlertInfo RSS Reader was a collaborative effort that included the technical team of Les, which developed a French version of Feedreader (open source application), in partnership with its developer, Thomas Toots. AlertInfo offers multiple functionality, in particular: adding or retrieving information feeds; seeing on screen the "abstract" of an article when available; sorting the feeds by type or by publisher; sending a URL of an article to a friend; alerting the user whenever an update is available, etc.
