Facebook and Skype Go Separate Ways

Apr 30, 2015

BEST PRACTICES SERIES

Back in 2011 Facebook and Skype announced they would be working together to allow Facebook users to videochat with each other. Since then, Facebook Messenger has undergone a number of changes, including being separated from the main Facebook mobile app. Meanwhile, according to Business Insider, Facebook has quietly replaced Skype with its own video and voice calling technologies.

What's the difference? Skype-powered calls required browser plug-ins, but the Facebook proprietary technology does not. Still, users probably did not notice any changes.
