NTT Cyber Communications Laboratory Group, a research division of Japan's largest telecommunications operator, NIPPON TELEGRAPH AND TELEPHONE CORPORATION (NTT), and EXPWAY of France, a provider of XML-based Electronic Content Guides, have teamed up to develop a Metadata System dedicated to mobile and broadband networks, based on the TV-Anytime Forum specifications. The TV-Anytime Metadata System will enable operators to deploy data-intensive applications to end-users.

The TV-Anytime Metadata System is able to support applications ranging from simple Electronic Program Guides to advanced multimedia search-engine functionalities, or chapter-based navigation. It can automatically feed the DVB-Service Information streams that are converted to XML as defined by the TV-Anytime specifications. The data is then transported as compressed data through the communication networks. This information can subsequently be authored, enriched, or segmented by the operator in order to facilitate the access of multimedia content by either mobile devices or fixed-line customers.
