EBSCO Publishing has added text-to-speech functionality to EBSCOhost databases by embedding Texthelp Systems' SpeechStream toolbar. Aimed at users ranging from English language learners to people with vision impairments, the SpeechStream toolbar allows text to be read aloud by a computerized voice whose accent-American, British, or Australian-can be set by the individual.

Other features of SpeechStream include the ability to highlight individual passages of text to be read aloud and the ability to set reading speed. This service comes at no additional cost to the user and is accessible with any full-text articles available in HTML.
