BumpTop, a startup that created software that enhances the desktops of both PCs and Macs, announced that it has been acquired by Google and will no longer be selling its application. The application will be freely available for download for one more week, while end-of-life support is being provided for paying customers.
BumpTop's software attempts to enhance the traditional desktop environments of personal computers by transforming them into 3D spaces more evocative of a physical desktop, allowing users to push, pull items, pile up, and otherwise interact with desktop icons. The company had raised some $1.65 million in funding prior to its acquisition, relying on two venture capital firms and a number of individual angel investors.
Google confirmed that it had acquired BumpTop, but otherwise provided no information on its plans for the company.
