BioMed Central's BMC Research Notes journal announced that it is commissioning a large, ongoing collection of educational articles that outline procedures for data sharing. The goal of the collection is to provide researchyers with best practice guidelines for sharing and publishing data, thereby encouraging data sharing in the scientific community and allowing for more data to be re-used.

The journal hopes to encourage as wide a range of submissions as possible by waiving the publication fee for all articles which use or link to open data that is prepared in line with a community-accepted standard. According to the organization, this move dovetails with BioMed Central's wider support for the open data movement, which includes the presentation of the ‘BioMed Central Open Data Award' at the publisher's annual Research Awards Ceremony.
