Barnes & Noble plans to "pursue strategic exploratory work to separate the Nook business" from the rest of the company, as reported on paidContent. In a statement, the company said, "There can be no assurance that the review of a potential separation of the NOOK digital business will result in a separation. There is no timetable for the review...."
B&N has also confirmed that it is in discussions to bring the Nook business abroad. The device is expected to launch in the U.K. later this year; British book retailer Waterstone's is rumored to be a possible retail partner.
B&N projects the Nook business will reach $1.5 billion this year. In the nine-week period ending December 31, unit sales of all Nook devices (the Nook Simple Touch e-reader, Nook Color, and Nook Tablet) were up 70% over the same time last year. Nook business across the company -- including digital content, device hardware, and accessories -- was up 43% to $448 million.
