Topsy has been keeping an archive of all the tweets ever tweeted since the 2006 launch of Twitter -- and now Apple has bought the company for over $200 million, according to the Wall Street Journal. With the acquisition, Apple will have access to the constant stream of real-time data being created by Twitter users.
Apple is running a serious data deficit to its competitors, Google and Microsoft. The lack of data puts Apple at a competitive disadvantage, but Topsy could remedy all of that. As Gigaom put it, "Theoretically, Apple could shut down Topsy tomorrow, keep ingesting that data stream from Twitter and keep growing its database without having to pay a third party."
