App Downloads Spike to Record High Following Holidays

Jan 03, 2012

Following the holidays, the app market hit an all-time high last week, with 1.2 billion apps downloaded between Dec. 25 and 31, according to Flurry Analytics & Estimates. According to paidContent, this figure is based on the top 20 mobile countries that Flurry regularly tracks and includes downloads to both Android and iOS devices.

The U.S. claimed the vast majority (42.3%) of app downloads, at 509 million. China came in second, at 99 million, followed by the U.K., at 81 million. Over the same week, Flurry estimates that 20 million Android and iOS smartphones and tablets were activated, 6.8 million on Dec. 25 alone, another record high.

The 1.2 billion figure represents a 60% increase over the Dec. 4-17 period, when the top 20 countries downloaded a combined 750 million apps. The following week, Dec. 18-24, totaled 857 million downloads, according to Flurry. Flurry's analytics are not broken down by platform or app category and only include downloads from the Apple App Store and Android Market, not those from other, non-official app stores.
