The Wall Street Journal reported that Amazon plans to launch a digital book rental service for a fixed monthly fee. The library of available books would primarily contain older works, and subscribers would have restrictions on how many books they could access each month. Amazon is currently in talks with book publishers about the service.
Despite being promised a "substantial fee" for participating in the service, publishers are allegedly showing some hesitation about adopting a Netflix-like book service. Some fear that the service would lower the value of books and put a strain on publishers' relationships with other book retail channels.
