Amazon Buys Rooftop Media, Announces Streaming Media Stick

Oct 28, 2014

Amazon is on a quest to bulk up its original streaming content. According to Reuters, Amazon's latest step toward online entertainment domination is the acquisition of Rooftop Media. Rooftop records comedians and clubs and licenses the digital rights to the recordings to media partners like Apple, Sirius, and Yahoo.

Amazon bought Audible-an audiobook service-in 2008, and now Rooftop is being absorbed by Audible. The purchase price was not disclosed, but Rooftop's content will now be available through Audible.

And just in time for the holiday rush, Amazon also announced the Fire TV Stick to go head-to-head with Chromecast. For $39 buyers get, according to Amazon, "a small stick that connects to the HDMI port on your HDTV for instant access to movies, TV shows, music, photos, apps, and games."
