Alcatel-Lucent and thePlatform Develop Multiscreen Video Platform

Jun 14, 2011

Alcatel-Lucent and thePlatform announced that they will partner to give TV providers new video service offerings for TVs, PCs, tablets, and mobile. The partnership will create a multiscreen video platform that supports live scheduled TV, video on demand, and "TV everywhere" services on a variety of screens, allowing subscribers to access video content from whatever device is most convenient. The solution is designed to advance video management and distribution capabilities through the service provider's content delivery network (CDN).

The multiscreen platform is comprised of three components: thePlatform's cloud-based mpx video management system, which provides the central logistics system for multiscreen video publishing and flexible deployment options; the CDN, based on Alcatel-Lucent's Velocix Digital Media Delivery Platform, which enables service providers to build and operate their own dedicated CDN as an alternative to shared third-party CDNs; and Multiscreen Clients, a suite of subscriber applications designed to support video playback on either a PC, tablet, or mobile device. Each of these components can be deployed individually or in combination.
