Describe the type of content you provide that serves this market: The specific content we provide to meet the needs of the financial services industry includes the Securities and Exchange Commission's filings, which form the core of our content sets; company financials, both as reported in [company statements] and standardized to enable cross-company comparisons; company profiles; institutional ownership data from 13(f) filings, which disclose the holdings of all asset managers with at least $100 million under management; insider holdings and trades, along with the share classifications of common stock or derivative shares of publicly traded companies; initial and secondary public offering data; annual and interim reports for more than 20,000 public companies worldwide; and transcripts of earnings and guidance calls for more than 3,000 U.S. public companies.

Why this market? What special needs does it have that your content meets? EDGAR Online makes the information contained in SEC filings both actionable and easy to use. For example, we can proactively notify a user of a change in a company's board of directors or a loss of a contract that will have a material impact on the financial health of a firm. We make data from a bank comparable to an insurance company or manufacturing firm for a quick analysis of financial performance and valuation, regardless of industry-specific reporting standards. We enable users to identify shifts in investment trends by large asset managers by exposing changes in their portfolio. And we keep our fingers on the pulse of the IPO and SPO markets, providing information on new entrants into a competitive space or capital acquisition for expansion.

Describe the importance of taxonomy to your offering: We use a series of taxonomies—most notably, the eXtensible Business Reporting Language taxonomies for fundamental data. XBRL is an open standard that uses XML-based data tags to describe line items reported on financial statements. Using XBRL enables EDGAR Online to provide more accurate and reliable access to financial information and to deploy it across all software formats and technologies. It also provides the flexibility to enter or tag the data once, then render it in many formats.

Describe the importance of metadata to your offering: EDGAR Online uses a wide range of metadata tags to provide functionality to our data. We receive a number of metatags with the original submission of content. Items like SIC code, company name, address, and form type are included in the SEC filings. We then add tags such as ticker symbol, sector, and stock exchange. The tags enable users to quickly search for exactly what they need or set up criteria on which to be alerted.

Describe an unusual or unexpected case in which your content helped a client: The most unusual case that we're aware of had to do with a divorce lawyer monitoring insider-trading activity. The lawyer was alerted to a major sale of stock by a corporate executive involved in an acrimonious divorce case he was handling. That information enabled the re-evaluation of the assets to be considered in the divorce proceedings.

What are the objectives and benefits of pursuing a vertical content offering rather than a more generalized one? Because SEC filings are so content rich, a company could develop a number of vertical products, enabling them to be generalists in the information market. We believe that developing an expertise from our focus on the financial services industry enables us to build better solutions that meet, and even exceed, our clients' needs.
