Business Challenge
As an outsourcer, SQ Global Solutions’ problems are its clients’ problems. A law firm client turned to SQ Global to help comply with its own client’s premerger antitrust review by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). The FTC issued a “second request,” meaning that the government body needed more documentation and information related to the proposed merger. To avoid jeopardizing the merger, the law firm had only 6 weeks to collect this data and move the process along. It needed a tool that would enable accurate and efficient document review.

Vendor of Choice: Attenex Corp.
Founded in 2000, e-discovery company Attenex Corp. provides document review and analysis software products for a customer base that comprises corporations and law firms. The Seattle-based company’s main goal is to improve its customers’ efficiency during the electronic discovery process. Its Attenex Patterns integrated e-discovery software suite comprises three applications: Document Mapper, Workbench, and Matter Manager.

The Problem in Depth
SQ Global’s client was faced with the task of reviewing about 500,000 documents for this second request assignment. It then became SQ Global’s responsibility to ensure all of these documents were reviewed within the specified 6-week timeframe and to maintain high standards of reviewer productivity and quality control in the process. Reviewers had to identify relevant documents as well as those of interest to economists supporting the merger. They also had to locate privileged documents.

SQ Global needed an efficient solution that wouldn’t break the bank. To keep costs reasonable, assembling a large staff for the project wasn’t an option.

In addition to the cost such a team could incur, SQ Global wanted to avoid problems with consistency that often arise with an oversized staff. The company felt that fewer people would make the project more manageable. “The challenge of doing something like this is that you [usually] have to put a lot of bodies on the project,” says Kimberly Williams, director of litigation services for SQ Global. “In addition to the expense [of hiring a large staff], it creates problems in terms of training and management. The more people you have, the more opportunity for human error.”
