Openwave Mobility, a software provider enabling operators to manage and monetize encrypted and unencrypted mobile data, announced that encrypted traffic travelling on many mobile networks has risen fivefold in just one year and has now reached 60% of all data. In the Spring of 2015 Facebook announced its Instant Articles, a partnership with publishers that would allow those companies to host their stories directly on Facebook and push it to users in Facebook's mobile app. The announcement created a lot of initial buzz, but then largely fell from public view-though many publishers have been participating in the program. Now, Facebook says it is gearing up for a new push on the Instant Articles front.

Trapit published the results of a survey on employee perspectives on content marketing and distribution. The survey revealed that 74.9% of employees identify some type of business benefit to sharing content on social media. Respondents indicated that brand awareness (42.7%), brand credibility (21%), and sales (11.2%) were the primary benefits of their efforts on social media.

Europe's "Right to Be Forgotten" law which allows individuals to request to have results removed from search engine results based on his or her name. Google requires users to fill out a form with information regarding the specific URLs they wish to have removed from results, along with their country of residence. This piece of the law has been in effect for quite some time, but up until now, the results only had to be removed from European search results. Now, France's CNIL, a data protection agency, has rejected an informal appeal from Google and ruled that the company must remove those URLs from all search results.

New data from Juniper Research has revealed that retailers seeking to capitalize on IoT (Internet of Things) technologies will spend an estimated $2.5 billion on hardware and installation costs, nearly a fourfold increase over this year's estimated $670 million spend. The hardware spend includes Bluetooth Beacons and RFID (radio frequency ID) tags. In the first instance, Bluetooth beacons enable visibility over footfall as well as the ability to push relevant information to consumers' smartphones. Meanwhile, RFID aids in real-time asset tracking, reduced labor costs, and even dynamic pricing according to stock levels and online pricing.

On Wednesday Facebook revealed it is testing out a virtual assistant. A few hundred people in the San Francisco-area who use the Facebook Messenger app are testing out the assistant, known only as M. Like Siri or Cortana, M can perform tasks--at least in theory--for users.

Salesforce has gotten a much-needed facelift. Originally launched in 1999, the well-known CRM tool used by about 150,00 customers announced Salesforce Lightning in a blog post, saying "It's a re-imagined platform designed to maximize sales rep productivity, complete with analytics and in-line intelligence that will drive sales precision."
