An analysis of U.S. ISBN data by ProQuest affiliate Bowker revealed that the number of self-published titles in 2012 jumped to more than 391,000, up 59% over 2011 and 422% over 2007. Ebooks continue to gain on print, comprising 40% of the ISBNs that were self-published in 2012, up from just 11% in 2007.

When Amazon purchased Goodreads earlier this year, many eyebrows were raised. Would Amazon's mission to sell books compromise the quality of the Goodreads community? Well, the social network for book-lovers, has experienced its first mass exodus after Goodreads announced it would be deleting reviews based on "author behavior" rather than the quality of the book.

Thuuz Sports, a mobile and connected TV service, announced the Glassware release of its popular Thuuz sports app. Thuuz is one of the first sports Glassware to be available on Google Glass. Emily Books is an independent digital bookstore that focuses on bringing "transgressive memoir and fiction" that has never appeared in digital form before to its readers. Customers can subscribe to Emily Books for $13.99 a month, or $159.99 for a years. Until now, users would receive and email with a link to download that month's book in a variety of DRM free formats, and now there is another option: the iOS7 app.

Netflix announced updates to it iOS app that will no doubt send many running to hit the update button. Users can now stream HD content via their iPhone and iPad apps, assuming their internet connection can handle the workload. And users with Apple TVs at home can now use AirPlay to watch Netflix content on their television while using their iPad or iPhone as their remote control.

It's time for another social media IPO. Twitter is expected to makes it S-1 filing public this week. Valued at a reported $15 billion, Twitter filed with the SEC quietly in July and did not provide a timeline. Some worried that a government shutdown could delay the IPO, but according to Quartz - which originally reported the story - the SEC confirmed that it could stay open for weeks in the event of a shutdown.

OverDrive announced that more than 17,000 Penguin ebooks are now live and available for purchase in OverDrive Marketplace. Penguin's ebooks are available for public and college libraries, including consortium, in the U.S. in the one copy/one user lending model for a one year term. Availability of the Penguin ebooks to libraries outside the U.S. is coming soon.

BlackBerry Limited announced it has signed a letter of intent agreement under which a consortium to be led by Fairfax Financial Holdings Limited has offered to acquire the company subject to due diligence. The letter of intent details a transaction in which BlackBerry shareholders would receive $9 in cash for each share they hold, in a transaction valued at approximately $4.7 billion.

Random House LLC, a U.S. division of Penguin Random House has partnered with Flipboard, the news and social media aggregation application, to become the first book publisher to curate content for the platform of 85 million users. The collaboration kicks off with two custom digital magazines. The first, curated by Margaret Atwood, is inspired by her new novel, MaddAddam and the second, by Westeros.org, explores the fictional worlds of George R. R. Martin.

The Federal Trade Commission says it will host a workshop on December 4, 2013 in Washington, DC to examine the practice of blending advertisements with news, entertainment, and other content in digital media, referred to as "native advertising" or "sponsored content." This type of advertising has grown increasingly common as publishers look for ways to get the attention of consumers who simply look past banner ads.

On Monday Google announced the ability to embed Google+ posts on websites, blogs, etc. Simply select the "Embed Post" option from a dropdown list, and then copy and paste the code. It's a familiar process. The posts should be fully interactive, according to Google, making it possible for readers to +1 a post.

Tina Brown has been making headlines regularly over the past few years, including for the guidance she provided in turning the venerated Newsweek magazine into a digital-only product. Now she's in the news again, this time for parting ways with IAC -- her financial backer -- and leaving The Daily Beast where she has long served as the editor-in-chief. Brown said in a statement that she will start Tina Brown Live Media, and will focus on growing her Women of the World conferences.

A print subscription to People will no longer get you free web access, according to paidContent. The magazine launched new digital products - including one that costs $200 a year -- and though it has bundled digital access with print subscription in the past, new subscribers won't get that same perk. For $112 a year you can get a print subscriptions or the People Digital Plus package (which includes digital and tablet access as well as access to the CelebWatch and CelebFood apps). For $20 more you can add a print subscription to the Digital Plus package.

According to a blog post on Livefyre's website, the company - whose StreamHub platform powers real-time conversation and social curation - has acquired Storify. The post says Storify will enable Livefyre to "integrate drag-and-drop editorial curation capabilities into our StreamHub platform."

TechCrunch reported on September 9, 2013 that Twitter bought MoPub for $350 million worth of stock. MoPub is a startup focused on enabling mobile publishers to manage their ad inventory. Twitter and MoPub have confirmed the acquisition though not the price.
