A jury in the District Court of Utah issued a decision in the long-running copyright battle between SCO Group and Novell over ownership of copyright assets associated with the Unix operating system. The jury found that Novell owned copyrights associated with the operating system, denying the SCO Group's claims that it was the rightful owner and a request for punitive damages of $215 million.

A national survey recently conducted by Arbitron Inc. and Edison Research found that 49% of those surveyed believed that newspapers will cease to exist in the future, to be replaced primarily by online news sources. The results represent a sharp jump from just three years ago, when only 27% expressed a similar sentiment.

A report from GigaOM Pro predicts that the worldwide paid content market will ride the momentum of an expanding user base to a total worth of $36 billion by the year 2014, more than double the $16.7 billion figure from 2009. The American Institute of Physics (AIP) announced the launch of a pilot program that allows individuals to "rent" single articles for a 24-hour period for $0.99. The service, created by DeepDyve, allows users to read, but not download or print, the full text of an article. Offerpal Media, a developer of virtual currency payment alternatives, announced it has acquired Tapjoy, creators of the Tapjoy platform for mobile developers and a provider of monetization and distribution services on the iPhone, Android, and other emerging mobile platforms.
