Springer is going Dutch, after a fashion, thanks to a new distribution deal with Sense Publishers, an academic publishing house based in Rotterdam, Netherlands. According to the deal, Springer will distribute Sense Publishers' ebook collection on SpringerLink, a run that covers about 100 new titles each year, starting in 2011.

EBSCO Publishing and Thomson Reuters announced an agreement that will allow mutual customers to access Web of ScienceSM results within EBSCO Discovery Service. Institutions that subscribe to both EDS and Web of Science will be able to search via EBSCO Discovery Service and see their Web of Science results directly in the EDS result list.

A new agreement between Credo Reference and SAGE Reference nearly doubles the size of the SAGE Reference Collection on Credo, bringing it from 68 titles to 125. The Association of Electronics, Information Technology and Telecommunications of Spain (AETIC) formed a new initiative on digital content in the interest of improving the Spanish economy's effectiveness in that area and improve collaboration with other areas of industry. The AETIC's new designation comprises nine subsections that totaled €9.2 billion (about $11.5 billion) in production in 2009, or 0.9% of the Spanish GDP.

Multimedia weather information site AccuWeather.com announced a collaboration with ADC WorldMap in which the Appleton, Wisc.-based digital cartographers will power the AccuWeather.com suite of web-based and mobile forecasts with the ADC WorldMap Digital Atlas mapping technology. The Broadband Commission for Digital Development, an organization that includes U.N. agencies, industry voices, and government leaders, released a plan to develop the world's broadband networks. The commission, which is co-chaired by Paul Kagame, president of Rwanda, and Mexican media magnate Carlos Slim, will deliver its findings to U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in New York on Sept. 19.

Being the owner of two of the most important e-readers on the market puts me in a unique position to speak to the best and the worst of what e-readers have to offer. In my view, the Kindle - iPad comparisons I have read are usually based on a rather arrogant assumption: that reading books is, somehow, a more worthwhile intellectual pursuit than magazines, newspapers, or other content sources.
