Amazon announced that its Kindle for the Web app will enable users to buy and read full Kindle books—no download or installation required. Bookstores and other retailers, authors, bloggers, and other website owners will be able to offer their readers the full text of Kindle books from their sites and will earn referral fees through the Amazon Associates Program for sales made through their sites. Website owners can embed the Kindle for the Web widget to offer Kindle books.

CMS vendor Kentico Software announced that Kentico CMS 5.5 R2 will be released by Dec. 15, 2010. It will be showcased at the LeWeb'10 conference in Paris. The new version of Kentico's enterprise CMS provides document and project management, Microsoft Azure support, WebDAV, workgroups, and SharePoint 2010 support.

DataMotion, Inc., a provider of secure information delivery solutions, launched SecureMail for Salesforce, a new application that les Salesforce users ensure sensitive emails and files sent from Salesforce Enterprise Edition are encrypted and secure. SecureMail can also be used when Salesforce is configured to automatically send out messages such as trouble ticket confirmations or messages generated from a programmed workflow, automatically encrypting such communications.

Adobe Systems Incorporated announced that Google has licensed Adobe Content Server 4 software as its ebook content protection solution for Google eBooks. Adobe Content Server enables consumers to purchase or lend ebooks through numerous points-of-purchase without being tied to one store.

Social search engine and analytics company PeopleBrowsr debuted Research.ly, a product that allows online marketers, brand managers, and social media experts to receive real-time analytics and conversations from the social web. ReSearch.ly provides demographic data, sentiment analysis, real-time and historic mentions, as well as viral analytics for a given keyword.

Google dove headlong into the ebooks arena with the Google eBookstore, an online storefront included more than 3,000,000 ebook titles. The store includes both current bestsellers and a variety of classics, and is compatible with numerous portable devices, smartphones, and tablets. The service is also tied into the Google eBooks Web Reader, which allows users to read, store, and purchase ebooks through cloud computing.

LivingSocial announced a $175 million investment from Amazon, as well as an additional $8 million investment from Lightspeed Venture Partners. According to the company, LivingSocial will use this investment to maintain its worldwide growth efforts and overall business growth.

Google is acquiring video optimization and DRM company Widevine for an undisclosed sum. Widevine develops digital media products for a wide variety of clients, including Cisco Systems, Charter Ventures, Liberty Global, Samsung and TELUS, with a particular focus on content protection through various forms of digital rights management.

HighWire Press launched the HighWire Mobile Web Interface for six American Heart Association journals. The Mobile Web Interface is a publication website optimized for smartphone devices and is the first of a suite of mobile products from HighWire, which includes full text apps for iPhone and iPad, as well as an RSS-driven iPhone app and support for the Kindle reader.

Gale, part of Cengage Learning, is releasing Gale NewsVault, an online platform that enables cross-searching of Gale's range of historical newspaper and periodical collections from within a single interface. The service will be available to libraries that have purchased any Gale historical newspaper or periodical collection, and will allow users to simultaneously search or browse multiple products offered by their institution.

Thomson Reuters acquired GeneGo, a provider of biology and disease information, analytics, and decision support solutions for pharmaceutical research and development. GeneGo will become part of the Healthcare & Science business of Thomson Reuters. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

ProQuest is expanding its service to government markets through the acquisition of the Congressional Information Service (CIS) and University Publications of America (UPA) product lines from LexisNexis. CIS includes an exhaustive online collection of legislative content and statistical works, while UPA includes deep historical sets and information. The acquisition includes digital products and a diverse microfilm vault.

The U.S. Government Printing Office (GPO) is making its metadata searchable through EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS), a product from EBSCO Publishing. Subscribers to EDS will be able to search for federal records from the GPO's Catalog of U.S. Government Publications. GPO works that will be available include the Congressional Serial Set Catalog, GPO Access Publications, and Internet Publications.

Meebo launched an alpha version of a web check-in system, which is available through a browser extension called the Meebo Minibar in addition to new profile pages and sites. Beginning in December, Meebo will begin rolling out its web check-in system on certain websites, starting with partners such as Macy's, Sprint, and L'Oréal Professionnel.

Vizrt entered into a terms sheet with LiberoVision through which Vizrt will purchase all of the issued and outstanding share capital of LiberoVision. The purchase will occur in three installments: 60% upon signing of the definitive agreement, 20% upon approval of the financial statements of LiberoVision for the year 2011, and 20% upon approval of the financial statements of LiberoVision for the year 2012.

Novell, Inc. announced that it has entered into an agreement through which it will be acquired by the Attachmate Corp. at $6.10 per share, or approximately $2.2 billion. Novell also announced it will sell certain intellectual property assets to CPTN Holdings, LLC, a consortium of technology companies organized by Microsoft, for $450 million in cash.
