Vimeo, an operating business of IAC, launched the new Vimeo Pro service. Vimeo Pro accounts offer a professional video hosting solutions aimed at entrepreneurs and is priced at $199 U.S. per year. The accounts include 50GB of video hosting and 250,000 plays, in addition to a suite of core tools designed to simplify hosting online video within a company website.

Social media giant Facebook snapped up Push Pop Press, a digital publishing company that developed a multi-touch interface for enhanced ebook publishing. The company, which was founded by two former Apple engineers, recently published Our Choice, an enhanced ebook by Al Gore detailing research and concepts for helping fight global warming.

The Harry Potter fan and ebook website Pottermore.com, which officially launches to the public in October, began a contest on July 31 to grant 1 million winners access to the beta site. As part of the "Magical Quill" contest, a clue will be posted on the Pottermore homepage each day for a week. Those who solve the clue then have the opportunity to register for early access to the site. A limited number of people can register each day, and the Pottermore site and @Pottermore Twitter account will indicate when registration for the day has come to a close.

Interim results from the first half of 2011 reveal that the Financial Times increased its audience and attracted more paying subscribers across all channels. As of June 2011, customers that subscribe to FT.com increased by 34% and the total number of registered users for the site grew to more than 3.7 million. This increase in registered users reflects a 49% growth compared to 2010.

Game designer Zynga has taken one of its most popular mobile apps-Words With Friends, a two-player Scrabble-like game-and made it available on the Facebook platform. Best known for creating Angry Birds, Zynga created many games specifically for iOS and Android devices, including Words With Friends. With a larger user base on Facebook, Zynga has brought many of the games it originally launched on the Facebook platform to mobile devices, but this is the first time that it has launched one of its mobile apps on Facebook.

Mobile Future partnered with the Analysis Group's David Sosa, Ph.D. and Mac Van Audenrode, Ph.D. to conduct a study that reveals mobile broadband's role in boosting the United States economy. The study, titled "Private-Sector Investment and Employment Impacts of Reassigning Spectrum to Mobile Broadband in the United States," concludes that reassigning 300 MHz of additional spectrum to wireless networks would spur $75 billion in capital spending, creating more than 300,000 jobs and $230 billion more in GDP. By reassigning 200 MHz of new spectrum would create 200,000 jobs and increase GDP by $155 billion, the paper predicts.

Springer is partnering with the Beijing Normal University to launch a fully sponsored open access (OA) journal called International Journal of Disaster Risk Science (IJDRS). The journal will be included in the SpringerOpen portfolio, which allows the journal's contents to be OA immediately, and available on Springer's online platform SpringerLink to anyone with an internet connection.

Cengage Learning completed its acquisition of the National Geographic Society's (NGS) digital and print school publishing unit, creating a new Cengage brand called National Geographic Learning. Cengage acquired extended rights to distribute NGS images, maps, videos, articles, and other content. The National Geographic Science Series, National Geographic Explorer! magazines, and Hampton Brown's literacy and language programs are now assimilated into Cengage's English Language Learning business.

A team of four informatics and computing professors from Indiana University who established the Truthy website received a National Science Foundation (NSF) grant of $905,000 to broaden its analysis of the public data stream from social networks. The team gained national attention last year after they established the website, which identified political astroturfing on Twitter. The researchers eventually plan to create and maintain a web service that allows people to follow trends, bursts and suspicious memes based on the stream of information from large-scale social networks.

Springer announced the purchase of the Asia Europe Journal from The Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF), a long-time partner Springer. ASEF will no longer be associated with the journal, which will be relaunched with new editors-in-chief and refocused on its core topics. The journal will further promote discussion on the challenges and opportunities of a common future of Asia and Europe.

A study of 250 marketing decision makers in the U.K. conducted by EPiServer found that 68% of businesses have appointed or plan to appoint a social media or online community manager within the next year. The survey, titled "The rise of the community manager," found that 28% already employ a social media or community manager and another 41% expect to hire one in the next 12 months.

Apple is enforcing its new in-app subscription rules for ereader apps, which require that apps be stripped of links to external sites for purchasing digital books or subscriptions. Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Kobo have since complied with the new terms, removing links to their bookstores from their iOS apps.

Google announced a partnership with JK Rowling's upcoming Pottermore website to help distribute the author's ebooks to users in the U.S. on the Google eBooks platform. Gebbie Press released PRPro, an online service that helps local and small businesses distribute press releases more effectively. PRPro lets users enter a zipcode and a mile radius and returns all the TV, radio, daily and weekly newspapers within that specific area. Trade and consumer magazines are broken down into 114 editorial categories so users may target their release. Users can then use the list to email or otherwise distribute press releases and media kits on their own.

Future Publishing, which publishers a variety of magazines such as T3, Total Film, and Guitar World, will be selling or closing several of its print titles and laying off 100 staff as part of a shift to focus primarily on digital publishing instead of print. According to a report in the Guardian, the titles being closed or sold include DVD & Blu-Ray Review, Home Cinema Choice, and Photoshop Focus Guides.

CBS Corporation and Amazon.com announced a non-exclusive licensing agreement that will let Amazon customers stream television shows from CBS's library of content. Amazon Prime customers will be able to instantly watch thousands of episodes from the CBS library, and Amazon will add 2,000 episodes to its Prime instant video service, including full seasons for 18 popular television series, such as The Tudors, Numb3rs, and the complete Star Trek franchise.

Amazon is debuting a program to allow students to rent textbooks in digital format for their Kindle devices at up to 80% off the list price of the print textbook. Students can choose rental lengths of between 30 and 360 days and pay only for the time they need the textbook, and also have the option to extend rental periods on a daily basis, if need be. The service will give students access to the content on PC, Mac, Kindle, or other mobile device, and will also be able to store highlights, notes, and annotations for access across devices.

Netflix Inc. announced that it is separating its unlimited streaming and unlimited DVD plans in the U.S., allowing customers to choose between a streaming-only plan, a DVD-only plan, or a combination of the two.
