NewspaperDirect's PressReader application will come preinstalled on BlackBerry PlayBook tablets, the company announced. A PressReader app for the PlayBook is already available on BlackBerry App World, but the agreement gives users immediate access to the more than 2,000 news publications available through the app.

Google acquired two tech companies to enhance its Chrome browser and its social network, Google+: Katango and Apture, Inc. Katango employees will join the Google+ team to work on its Circles feature. Though Adobe has delivered Flash Player to mobile browsers and has been a strong proponent of Flash in a face-off against Apple, which rejected its usefulness on mobile platforms, Adobe announced on its blog that it would discontinue Flash development for mobile and instead focus on HTML5 efforts. Adobe will continue developing Flash Player for desktop PCs.

Rakuten, Inc. entered into the process of acquiring Kobo, Inc. for $315 million in cash. Kobo offers a range of e-readers and e-reading apps, as well as a catalog of more than 2.5 million ebooks. Kobo places emphasis on social reading, and has debuted integrated social reading platforms Kobo Reading Life and Kobo Pulse.

Springer Science+Business Media agreed to acquire the Wolters Kluwer Pharma Marketing and Publishing Services division (MPS). Springer will add MPS to its Springer Healthcare unit. Barnes & Noble introduced the NOOK Tablet, which weighs in at 14.1 oz. but supplies 16GB of storage, double the space of some other tablets. NOOK Tablet is available in the NOOK Digital Shops and displays in Barnes & Noble stores, which feature a range of NOOK digital devices and free NOOK Reading Apps.

While Nisenholtz will stay through a transition period, it was reported that there are no plans to appoint a successor. Beginning in early 2012, Disney will contribute family-friendly video entertainment to YouTube as well as Disney.com. Both companies will spend a combined $10 to $15 million on original video series produced by Disney and distributed on a co-branded channel on Disney.com and YouTube.

Netflix struck a deal with MGM to stream newly-released feature films in the U.K. and Ireland upon Netflix's launch in early 2012. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. The deal is a multiyear licensing agreement and will cover most of the first-runs for feature films from MGM and its distribution partners in the region.

Acquia launched Acquia U, a program to train and employ career changers and college grads in Drupal, its open-source social publishing system. The Acquia U program will hire professionals as client advisors, provide them six weeks of paid training, and then hire them into Acquia or one of Acquia's partners.

If you were thinking about getting a tablet this year and weren't sure which one, things just got a little bit more confusing. Amazon is releasing it's Kindle Fire on November 16, but rumor has it that Barnes & Noble will be releasing a tablet of its own at the same time for $249. Documents leaked to several organizations gave full specs for the new tablet.

LinkedIn Corporation announced today that it has filed a registration statement with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for a proposed public offering of shares of its Class A common stock. LinkedIn proposes to sell approximately $100 million of its shares, as well as any shares issued to the underwriters to cover over-allotments. The remaining shares will be sold by existing stockholders.

Amazon announced the Kindle Owners' Lending Library, which lets Kindle owners who are also Amazon Prime members borrow ebooks for free with no due dates. Readers can borrow one ebook at a time and keep it for an unlimited amount of time, but the offering is only available to owners of actual Kindle devices, including the upcoming Kindle Fire tablet—it will not be available through Kindle apps.

Two Seattle residents have filed a class-action lawsuit against HTC and AccuWeather, Inc. The plaintiffs allege that the AccuWeather app on their HTC EVO phone has been transmitting precise and unencrypted GPS data at regular intervals as well as when they open the app to check the weather.

Following a three-month partnership, Urban Airship, Inc. has acquired SimpleGeo, Inc. Terms of the all-stock deal have not been disclosed, but the sum is alleged to be about $3.5 million.
