After a year of beta testing, Google released its DoubleClick for Publishers (DFP) Video solution for advertisers, which is designed to ease ad trafficking, improve workflow, enhance scalability, and increase profitability. Google also announced the launch of DFP Small Business Video in beta, which is supported by a partnership with Brightcove, Inc. and LongTail Ad Solutions.

In a press release this morning, The Times says it is expanding it's Opinion Pages online. The changes will include more contributors, more content, and more video, as well as enhanced discussion features.

Brainshark, Inc. introduced SlideShark, an app tailored to display PowerPoint presentations on the iPad. SlideShark is available for free download from Apple's App Store. The app is designed to preserve animations, fonts, graphics, and colors. Presentations can be downloaded and played locally, without the requirement of an internet connection.

Mag+, part of Moving Media+, has provided the Apple Newsstand with almost a dozen magazines designed especially for the iPad. Titles from Mag+ include Popular Science+, Popular Photography+, Outside+, and Maxim+. Newsstand is available with iOS5, which was released last Wednesday.

In the coming weeks, Google will shut down Google Buzz to focus their social media efforts solely on Google+. Users will still be able to see previously-posted content on their Google Profile and download it using Google Takeout. In addition to Buzz, iGoogle's social features, Google Labs, Google Code Search, and Jaiku will soon shut down.

After months of negotiation, Microsoft acquired for Skype, paying $8.5 billion. Under the terms of the agreement, Skype will become a new business division within Microsoft, and Skype CEO Tony Bates will assume the title of president of that division. Microsoft plans integrate Skype into its existing devices and systems.

UK Publisher Pan Macmillan is partnering with literary agency Curtis Brown UK to release hundreds of out-of-print titles as digital editions under the imprint Macmillan Bello. Available in both digital and print-on-demand formats, 120 titles will be released in November, with an additional 400 scheduled for release in 2012.

EBSCO Publishing acquired Ergonomics Abstracts, a database focused on ergonomics and human factors, from Taylor & Francis. The database provides indexing for ebooks, journal articles, and reference works, and includes abstracts of articles and records from more than 135,000 works covering more than 25 years of ergonomics research.

NewspaperDirect teamed up with Kooaba AG, a Swiss image-recognition startup, to enhance Kooaba's mobile app, Paperboy. Using the app, available on iPhone and Android, readers can take pictures of articles that interest them in their local printed newspapers and then share the articles as PDFs through Twitter, Facebook, email, or SMS.

WHSmith announced it would partner with Kobo in the U.K. and Ireland to bring Kobo e-readers and Kobo's ebook store to its customers. More than 750 WHSmith high street and travel stores will carry Kobo's range of Wi-Fi e-readers. WHSmith will also connect its customers with Kobo's ebook store, in lieu of the existing WHSmith ebook store.

Impelsys, provider of digital delivery solutions, released version 3.2 of its iPublishCentral digital publishing platform, which expands support for mobile devices: the platform's Bookstore-as-an-App framework will now support iPad, iPhone, and Android mobile devices. iPublishCentral 3.2 also lets publishers create and price ebooks in multiple formats, such as PDF, EPUB, or MOBI.

Demand Media, a "content-farm" that uses thousands of freelance writers and editors to generate content for sites such as eHow.com, has reportedly decided to lessen its pace. An email the company sent to its staff, who have produced more than 3 million articles for eHow.com, said that in order to prevent redundancy, fewer assignments would be doled out from now on.

Bowker, a provider of market research information and business intelligence on book markets in the U.S., through BML Bowker, in the U.K., will launch a study that will assess and track device adoption, attitudes, and purchasing habits of e-book consumers in Europe, Asia, Australia, and North and South America. Hulu announced a multi-year agreement that brings Hulu and Hulu Plus members hundreds of hours of Spanish-language video from the Univision family of networks. Apple announced the death of Steve Jobs yesterday, due to complications from the pancreatic cancer he had battled since 2004. He was 56. "Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being," said a statement on Apple's website, calling Jobs "a dear friend and an inspiring mentor."

A new report from eMarketer estimates that advertisers will pony up nearly $1.23 billion on U.S. mobile advertising by the end of the year. That is up nearly 75% from 2012. The fastest growing category was video, but it is projected to only represent 4.7% of the market. Messaging-based advertising represents the largest piece of the pie at 36.1 percent of all mobile ad spending.
