Ping.it, an Oslo-based web startup, introduces an alternative to information overload and mass content sharing. The new technology lets people send "pings" - relevant content recommendations - straight to designated recipients instead of sharing to a public stream, as in traditional social networks. And unlike e-mail accounts, the Ping.it inbox has no address that can be reached by unsolicited content.

Breaking up is hard to do, which may be why Facebook and Zynga have simply opted to "see other people" rather than break off their relationship all together. On November 29, the two companies made regulatory filings that detailed changes to the partnership that has made virtual farming all the rage. In 2010 the companies signed a five year agreement, but they are now cutting it short.

Random House is adding three new digital-only imprints to its line-up, according to Publisher's Weekly. The publishing giant -- which announced a merger with Penguin earlier this year -- will introduce Alibi, Flirt, and Hydra. The imprints will produce mysteries/thrillers, YA, and science fiction respectively. Random House is also, reportedly, expanding its romance digital imprint, Loveswept.

The idea behind Patron Driven Acquisition (PDA) is simple: to offer users access to all digital content, but only charge for actual use. Beginning in 2013, two of De Gruyter's publishing partners - Harvard University Press, and Böhlau Publishers - will offer their content globally through De Gruyter Online as part of the PDA distribution model. ABI Research data says mobile app revenue will top out at over $30 billion by the end of the year, PCMag reports. That is nearly double what apps raked in last year.
