Elsevier has announced xqDoc, an open source cross-referencing tool for XQuery applications, and recognizes Darin McBeath, an Elsevier employee in the company's Advanced Technology Group, as the developer of the code. The tool is now freely available to the open source community.

Topix.net has announced that Gannett Co., Inc., Knight-Ridder, Inc., and Tribune Company jointly have acquired a 75% stake in Topix.net. Ownership is split evenly, with each media company owning 25% and the Topix.net founders retaining a 25% stake. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Cadmus Communications Corporation has announced that the American Chemical Society (ACS) has signed a multi-year contract extension for printing and related services. The ACS, a society publisher of scientific content, has relied on Cadmus for the printing and distribution of its 32 scholarly journals for many years.

H.W. Wilson's Biography Reference Bank database now includes some 5,000 profiles from Oxford University Press's American National Biography, a biographical reference series on people who have shaped American history and culture. In all, Biography Reference Bank covers over 500,000 people. This latest expansion follows the recent addition of some 100,000 names to the database, reflecting personal names cited as subjects in more than 50 WilsonWeb periodicals reference databases.

Verity Inc. has announced that IBM has upgraded the search and content organization capabilities of its digital asset management solution for publishing with the integration of Verity K2 Developer (K2D). IAC/InterActiveCorp and Ask Jeeves, Inc. have signed an agreement under which IAC will purchase Ask Jeeves. Under the terms of the agreement, IAC will issue 1.2668 shares of common stock for each share of Ask Jeeves common stock in a tax-free transaction valued at $1.85 billion net of cash acquired.

Akamai Technologies, Inc. and Speedera Networks Inc. have signed a definitive agreement for Akamai to acquire Speedera in a stock-for-stock merger transaction. IBM and Ascential Software Corporation have entered into a definitive agreement for IBM to acquire the equity of Ascential Software, a publicly held company based in Westboro, MA, in an all cash transaction at a price of approximately $1.1 billion or $18.50 per share.
