Nor is it a localized, regional network. It's Google+. But Facebook still has a huge lead, with more than double to number of monthly users of its nearest competitor.

In a post on its website, Payvment announced that it will be joining a new company and shutting down its platform on February 28. The Payvment platform has been used by people selling goods on Facebook. Those people, according to the post, will have one month to transfer their account to Ecwid in order to continue selling on Facebook.

Macmillan Publishers, announced an agreement to make a collection of popular ebooks available to libraries via OverDrive before the end of the first quarter. Under the pilot program, OverDrive-powered libraries will have access to more than 1,200 titles from Macmillan's Minotaur Books imprint, featuring award-winning authors such as Olen Steinhauser and Julia Spencer-Fleming. OverDrive supplies Next Generation digital library services for more than 22,000 libraries and schools worldwide, with support for all major ereading devices, including Kindle.

ProQuest, an information company central to global research, has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Ebook Library (EBL), which will expand its ebook delivery and aggregation capabilities with libraries worldwide. The acquisition will enable users to discover content across multiple formats including books, journals, dissertations, newspapers, and video. ProQuest acquired ebook pioneer ebrary in January 2011 and plans to combine the strongest features of ebrary and EBL into a single, comprehensive ebook platform once finalized.

Approximately two-thirds of college students need financial aid to begin or continue their studies, according to the United States Department of Education's National Center for Education Statistics. To help students find ways to fund their education, Credo announced it has partnered with Reference Service Press, an authority on college scholarships. The Search Agency, a global online marketing firm, released its quarterly State of Paid Search Report, which, among other findings, reports that smartphones and tablets drove 23% of total clicks in the fourth quarter of 2012, an 89% increase year over year. The quarterly report analyzes aggregated client data from various industries on paid search marketing trends across search engines and devices on a year-over-year and quarter-over-quarter basis.

OpenX Software Ltd., a provider of digital and mobile advertising revenue products and services, announced it has completed a $22.5 million Series E funding round. This brings the total investment in OpenX to more than $70 million. New investor Samsung Venture Investment Corporation led the round. Existing investors Accel Partners, Index Ventures, SAP Ventures, Mitsui & Co. Global Investment, Inc., and Presidio Ventures also participated in the round. EMC Corporation announced beta availability of EMC's Syncplicity cloud-based online file sharing service with the option for customers to use either EMC Isilon scale-out NAS or EMC Atmos object-based storage. The rumor mill is in overdrive thanks to a vague invitation from Facebook to reporters to "come see what we're building." The invite went out on Tuesday, and stocks started to rise on Wednesday while speculation ran wild. The event isn't scheduled until January 15, giving the media plenty of time to guess just what it is that Facebook is building -- and unlike an Apple event, it seems that no one actually knows what will be revealed.

If you live in New Zealand you may have noticed some changes to your Facebook page. According to The Next Web, Facebook is trying out a new single-column design for the much-maligned Timeline. TNW says the new layout has status updates, and other activity appearing only in the left-hand column while the right side of your page is static, which is a small change that many people may not even notice.

Andrew Sullivan is taking The Dish and going it alone. In a post made on the first workday of the 2013, Sullivan announced he was taking The Dish and leaving The Daily Beast. When the contract expired at the end of 2012, Sullivan says he started mulling over his options:"As usual, we sought your input and the blogosphere's - hence the not-terribly subtle thread that explored whether online readers will ever pay for content, and how. The answer is: no one really knows. Barnes & Noble is kicking off the new year by selling a five percent stake in Nook Media to Person, according to Fierce Content Management. For $89.5 million, Pearson now has the right to publish its education content on the Nook and perhaps even distribute devices.
