Hachette Book Group will make its entire digital catalog of more than 5,000 ebooks available to libraries and schools via OverDrive. Beginning May 8, OverDrive-powered libraries and schools in the U.S. and Canada will have access to authors such as David Baldacci, Sara Zarr, Sandra Brown, James Patterson, David Sedaris and Kate Atkinson. OverDrive supplies Next Generation digital library services for more than 22,000 libraries and schools, with support for all major e-reading devices, including iPad, Nook, and Kindle.

It wasn't long ago that pundits were predicting the fall of Netflix as other streaming options rose to prominence, but the company is now beating expectations thanks in part to its original content strategy. On April 22 the company reported its first quarter earnings, and surprised investors by reporting $1 billion in revenue and $.05 earnings per share. While the profits were less than expected, Netflix chalked it up to "extinguishment of debt"--and without that cost it would have beat the original expectations of $0.20 per share.

Both companies are relatively new, but Medium's co-founders Biz Stone and Evan Williams have a long history of success with such tools as Blogger and, most notably, Twitter. Medium, launched in late 2012, is a content creation and consumption platform, which is still invite-only.

The number of publisher-owned online communities is set to more than double over the next two years, according to research released by Publishing Technology at The London Book Fair. The study, conducted by Bowker Market Research, found that two thirds of responding publishers currently host reader communities, and that this is set to rise to over 90% over the next two years. A quarter expect to have seven or more networks up and running by 2015, with many respondents predicting a huge growth in the number of online communities for their company, from a current average of 2.1, to more than five over the next two years.

In a blog post, LinkedIn announced it has acquired Pulse for a reported $90 million. The company wrote, "We believe LinkedIn can be the definitive professional publishing platform - where all professionals come to consume content and where publishers come to share their content." And apparently, the Pulse acquisition is the next step to achieving that goal.

This time around the rumor mill wasn't so far off from the truth. During an April 4 event, Facebook debuted Home, a custom homescreen for Android phones. Not quite the phone many had predicted, but not totally unrelated. Users of one of these phones will see a Cover Feed when they wake up the device, and all of their friends updates -- links, photos, etc. -- will be right there on the homescreen. And instead of having to open an app to use Instagram or Facebook messenger, users will be able to do all of those things straight from the homescreen of a phone with Home downloaded on it.
