Amazon Web Services, Inc. announced several new capabilities to make it easier for developers to build, deploy, and scale mobile applications. Amazon Cognito is a new service that provides simple user identity and data synchronization that lets developers create apps that authenticate users through popular public login providers, and then keep app data such as user preferences and game state synced between devices. The new Amazon Mobile Analytics service allows developers to easily collect and analyze app usage data, up to billions of events per day from millions of users, and delivers usage reports.

Sitecore, a provider of customer experience management, announced it will offer enhanced social media management capabilities to its customers with the introduction of Sitecore Social Powered by Komfo. Sitecore has acquired a majority stake in Komfo, a Danish social media marketing and community engagement application provider. The investment will extend Komfo's presence in global markets and forms the basis of Sitecore's social media product.

An OS for the Internet of Things may be on the way thanks to $4.9 million in funding for Spark Labs. According to Gigaom, the "Series A funding came from Lion Wells Capital, O'Reilly AlphaTech Ventures, SOSventures, and Collaborative Fund as well as a consortium of strategic angel investors." Spark Labs is best known for having created a development board that allows users to create cloud-connected devices.

It's estimated that 2.5 billion gigabytes of data are created every day, and 80% of that data is comprised of unstructured content such as contracts, claims forms, and permit applications. Entravision Communications Corporation, a diversified Spanish-language media company, announced that it has acquired Pulpo Media, Inc., a leading provider of digital advertising services and solutions focused on Hispanics in the U.S. and Latin America. The transaction will be funded from Entravision's cash on hand, and includes an initial payment of approximately $15 million and up to $3 million in contingent earn out payments based upon the achievement of certain performance benchmarks.

Back in January, Nest was acquired by Google for $3.2 billion, which put an end to its plans to open its API, but now Google is looking to extend Nest's platform-perhaps to compete with Apple's HomeKit. According to Nest, it is partnering with everyone from Mercedes Benz to Whirlpool. This follows the news that Nest is buying video monitoring company Dropcam for $555 million.

Ebook subscription service Oyster--sometimes referred to as the Netflix of books--has expanded its availability. Previously, the service was only available on iOS devices, but is now available on Nook HD, Android devices, and Kindle Fire. According to Gigaom, the new Oyster apps also boasts some new features, such as "time to read" which lets you know how much of the book you have left to read, and the ability to turn the page with volume buttons on Android devices.

ProQuest has added more than 1,650 ebook titles from publishers such as Wiley and Wolters Kluwer Health to Academic Complete, the flagship ebook database from ebrary. The new content will help improve research outcomes, while a new enhancement for the database - LibraryThing for Libraries Book Display Widget -- will enable libraries to easily display the titles visually for better discoverability and usage.

EBSCO Information Services (EBSCO) has increased the number of databases included in its policy for metadata sharing and technology collaboration partnerships with discover vendors. Now, EBSCO makes all metadata -- and full text when contractually allowed -- available for a new total of 179 EBSCO full-text databases, as well as all 74 EBSCO full-text historical digital archives and all 550,000+ EBSCO ebooks.

Fans of The Colbert Report have probably already heard that Amazon is in a tiff with Hachette publishers. While Hachette and Amazon haggle over a new contract, Amazon has made Hachette books unavailable for pre-order and shipments of its books are being delayed. Hachette, however, is not the only company in Amazon's crosshairs. Warner Bros. is having similar problems regarding its upcoming DVD releases for titles like The Lego Movie, according to Gigaom.

Vdopia, a provider of mobile video advertising, reports that smartphone advertising is having a significant impact on the way that consumers interact with various forms of entertainment. The number of people who consumed entertainment content on their smartphones ever in a month jumped 28% in the past year to 109 million. Buying movie or event tickets via mobile has grown nearly 40% in the past year. Mobile entertainment audiences not only are twice as likely to click on mobile ads but 45% recall seeing ads vs. only 24% for non-mobile entertainment audiences.
