Niume addresses the need for a more instant, and interactive, social network. Users post in themed communities known as "circles" and the content is delivered to everyone following that circle. Sporting News Media (SNM) has launched a proprietary research program, being called "Sporting Views", which will shed light on how sports fans consume and engage with digital sports content in the US. A survey by Publishing Technology revealed an increasing number of people are now using their mobile phones to read ebooks. The survey of 3,000 consumers across the U.S. and U.K. found that 43% have read an ebook, or part of an ebook, on their handsets, and that 66% (59% U.K./ 72% U.S.) of mobile phone book readers currently read more on their phones than they did last year.

A notice posted on Redbox Instant's site gave users little warning that the service would end on October 7. The notice was short on details, but got the point across. Gigaom reports that new sign-ups had been disabled for three months due to a credit-card fraud issue. This resulted in new customers being shut out, as well as problem for existing customers whose cards had expired and could not update their payment information.

Yes, Amazon and Hachette are still battling over ebooks, and Authors United--a group of authors from Hachette and other publishers--have reached out to the Amazon board. In the course of negotiations, Amazon had refused to let users pre-order Hachette books, and has been slow to fill orders. Meanwhile, it says that all it wants is for Hachette to sell its ebooks for $9.99, but Hachette disagrees.
